As 2014 draws to a close, the students, volunteers, and instructors at Impact Bay Area are sharing our powerful stories in a Giving Tuesday campaign in order to continue our mission to teach effective boundary setting, personal safety, and physical self-defense skills throughout the bay area. Our goal? To raise $20,000 this holiday season.

Skills You Already Have for Protecting Yourself--a response to the assault in the Mission last weekend

As you may have heard, last weekend a woman was attacked in the Mission District of San Francisco. She sent an email describing the incident to neighborhood groups and made a police report. She fought her way out of the situation using her strength and courage, and used techniques that are available to all of us. Here are some of the things she did:

I took Basics in 1998, when I was 19 years old. A few years later, I used my Impact skills to defend myself against a man armed with a knife and a dog on an isolated back-country trailhead in Hawaii.

JANE

JANE is a narrative feature film slated to begin shooting in Monterey and Carmel next summer. JANE follows an exceptional 15- year-old girl on a healing journey after a high profile sexual assault. JANE gives its audience a chance to root for a young girl who goes through an unfortunately common traumatic event and finds her way back to "standing even."

Kevin's Story: "I Defended a Boy Today"

I had the good fortune to take the Men’s Basics Impact the weekend of October 18-20, 2002, after 28 years of living in fear following an assault at school in May 1974. Shortly after that weekend, I wrote a series of diary entries describing my class experiences. Two years later, I was assaulted at work in my taxi – and discovered that I had gained the tools and the skills necessary to deal with and end the fight.

Clint's Story: Getting my Life Back

Through this class I gained more than just a belief in my ability to protect myself and the knowledge and capability to do it.  I regained the self confidence and sense of freedom I lost that beautiful Southern California evening 20+ years ago -  I got back the ability to joyfully, freely and enthusiastically experience the fun and adventure the world has to offer. In short,  I got back my life.

Throwing Shoes

I’d been meaning to go to IMPACT for years before I actually went. When I looked at the classes online though, something always came up to prevent me from signing up. I’d find out about a local class right after it passed, it was too much money, my ankle was acting up, I didn’t want to do it alone, I was out of shape.
